How does disaster recovery work?
Disaster recovery works by keeping current backups or replicas of your systems and data in a safe, separate location, together with a documented plan for restoring them. When a disaster strikes, engineers follow the plan to bring systems back within an agreed time (the RTO), losing no more than an agreed amount of data (the RPO). Regular testing ensures the process works when it's needed.
How does business continuity planning work?
Business continuity planning starts by identifying your critical business functions and what they depend on. You then put measures in place — backups, alternate sites, communication plans, defined roles — so those functions can continue or resume quickly during a disruption. The plan is documented, assigned to owners, and tested regularly so everyone knows what to do.
What are RTO and RPO?
RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the maximum acceptable time to restore a system after an outage. RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the maximum acceptable amount of data loss, measured in time — e.g. an RPO of one hour means backups run at least hourly. These two targets drive the design of your backup and DR solution.
Why isn't a simple backup enough?
